This past Saturday, December 16, was the one-year anniversary of the day that Jose Maria Sison (Joma) died. Joma was so many things - a revolutionary, a philosopher, a political leader, a poet, a teacher, and more.
For decades, he was a leading figure in the National Democratic movement in the Philippines, a 55-year-long revolution for national independence and economic development. His writings about the Philippines, including the ubiquitous Philippine Society and Revolution, have been read by millions of people across the world and will continue to teach activists for many years to come.
Last year around this time, I wrote Strategy and Tactics (which was originally released on Nine Rifles) as a tribute to him. Despite many years of hardship including almost 10 years as a political prisoner, and even though he was forced to spend the last decades of his life in exile in the Netherlands, Joma kept the struggle of his people in mind every single day of his life. We still have so much we can learn from him.
